May 2009:  Alex Zheng has a routine blog on the Smart Grid News website.  Alex covers a variety of important issues in the electric industry today.  You can find Alex's blog at the following link:

April 2009:  Steve Pullins has been named to the Technical Review Committee for a group of wind energy transmission studies for the state of Hawaii.  The studies are sponsored by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative, and Hawaiian Electric Company.

March 2009:  Horizon Energy Group along with Enernex Corporation and ICMAS, Inc formed a new company, Sunny Systems LLC, to focus on bringing the right solar systems solution to reduce long-term energy cost and maximize business sustainabilty for commercial business clients.  Solar systems are complex energy solutions requiring an understanding of how to optimize the energy application of solar as well as the engineering requirements to install such systems.  One needs to look beyond the local roofer or home builder for a cost-effective, safe, sustainable design and installation.

February 2009:  The Florida Public Service Commission approved Horizon Energy Group's contract with Progress Energy Florida to supply the utility company with as much as 60 megawatts of electricity, enough to power as many as 40,000 homes, with landfill waste and using a relatively new process called gasification.  The plant will turn the waste into energy.

November 2008: Horizon Energy Group signed a contract last month with Progress Energy Florida to supply the utility company with as much as 60 megawatts of electricity, enough to power as many as 40,000 homes, with landfill waste and using a relatively new process called gasification.  The plant will turn the waste into energy. It is expected to be operating in less than five years.  Unlike combustion, gasification involves heating the waste without the presence of oxygen and breaking down the material's molecules until you have mostly carbon monoxide and hydrogen. Weller said the next step is to burn the relatively clean gas to create energy.  Unlike many other facilities that currently burn garbage, there would be almost no greenhouse gas emissions.

September 2008: Horizon Energy Group is pleased to announce that it was named a "Company to Watch" in the recently released book "Perfect Power" by Robert Galvin and Kurt Yeager. Horizon is recognized for its leadership in the Smart Grid arena of strategy and implementation. Horizon has leadership and design roles in the national DOE/NETL Modern Grid Strategy, the San Diego Microgrid project, and the West Virginia Smart Grid Implementation Plan. Perfect Power is the first in-depth look at an electric economy with broad application of microgrid strategies to improve reliability and offset the drivers for increasing electric prices to consumers. Robert Galvin is the former Chairman of Motorola Corporation and Kurt Yeager is the former Chairman of the Electric Power Research Institute.

August 2008: Alex Zheng, a Horizon Energy Group research associate, collabotated with Global Smart Energy to deliver a recent report titled "The Electricity Economy" for the Global Environment Fund. The report analyzes the recent trends around electricity infrastructure and points to the likely implications of these changes. The report also assesses areas of potential investment and business opportunities in a new electricity economy, and considers many of the emerging technologies which are likely to have a high impact on the industry.

August 2008: Horizon Energy Group signed an agreement with Progress Energy Florida (PEF) for renewable energy.
As part of its commitment to help secure the region’s energy future, Progress Energy Florida has signed two new contracts to purchase up to 100 megawatts (MW) of electricity from renewable energy resources. These contracts are part of the company’s effort to confront the new energy realities of rising fuel prices, growing energy demand and global climate change.
PEF has signed a purchase-power agreement with Vision Power Systems (VPS) to purchase 40 MW of electricity from biomass resources beginning in 2010 and an agreement with Horizon Energy Group to purchase up to 60 MW of electricity generated from municipal solid waste, using an advanced gasification process. Horizon has yet to choose a location, but it expects the plant to be located in Central Florida and begin operation in 2013.

July 2008: CATA’s Transmission Operator Simulator project started.
During this project, the team will assess the existing transmission operator simulators for training that are used in Europe, determine the best approach to designing and building a transmission operator simulator to best serve the PSE-Operator dispatchers, develop a simulator specification, and develop the transmission operator simulator.

July 2008: West Virginia Smart Grid Implementation Plan launched.
Horizon Energy Group, along with West Virginia Division of Energy, the Public Service Commission of West Virginia, West Virginia University, Appalachian Power and Allegheny Power, is a part of the team lead by the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL).
The Team will conduct an in-depth review of the potential benefits of modernizing the electricity transmission and distribution grid for the state of West Virginia. The outcome of this project will be a cost and benefit analysis to implement and operate a Smart Grid in West Virginia. For favorable Smart Grid scenarios where the benefits outweigh the costs, a Smart Grid Implementation Plan will be developed to help guide utilities, policy-makers and regulators through the Smart Grid transition.

April 2008:  U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Assistant Secretary for Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability Kevin Kolevar announced the Department’s plans to invest up to $50 million over five years (Fiscal Years 2008 - 2012), subject to appropriations from Congress, in nine demonstration projects competitively selected to increase efficiency in the nation’s electricity grid.  Horizon Energy Group in conjunction with San Diego Gas and Electric, Advanced Control Systems, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, the University of San Diego, Motorola, and Lockheed Martin will develop a dispatchable distribution feeder for peak load reduction and  wind-farming. The project aims to prove the effectiveness of integrating multiple distributed energy resources with advanced controls and communication systems to improve stability and reduce peak loads on feeders/substations.
